Garnet

Katherine Bree March 28, 2024

The birthstone popularly associated with January is Garnet.

The word "Garnet" comes from the Latin word granatus for seed or grain, most likely a reference to the seeds of the pomegranate fruit. In fact, some garnets do resemble pomegranate seeds in colour, size, and shape.

Since ancient times, garnet's traditional red colour was associated with the heart and blood. People believed garnet had a mystical power to counter melancholy, stir the heart to great deeds, prevent haemorrhage, and improve circulation.

I have used Garnet beads throughout the Russet and Twilight themes of the Earth Treasure collection.

Jewellery inspired by the elements.

Katherine Bree January 6, 2023

Around 450BC, the ancient Greeks proposed the existence of five basic elements. Of these, four are physical. Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.
Historically and intuitively, certain gemstones have been linked with each element. They have informed four colourways: Fire, Air, Water and Earth.

Pigment & Stone

Katherine Bree October 2, 2022

An August day in Yorkshire 2022

On a gorgeous sunny day in August I travelled up to the Yorkshire Wolds to meet with artist Lesley Seeger, to work on our upcoming joint exhibition Pigment and Stone. We invited photographer Lucy Saggers to document our collaboration.

Lesley lives an idyllic rural life. A landscape painter, she paints Plein Air and is surrounded by the most beautiful scenery. She works very freely, abstracting the landscape into other-worldly and magical scenes. Her use of colour is inspiring.

Inspired by a selection of her work, I am creating a collection of one-off jewellery pieces which will be on display at the gallery.

Pigment and Stone can be seen at the Pyramid Gallery in York from 5th to 27th November 2022, 11am - 3pm.

Free eco giftwrap this Christmas.

Katherine Bree October 22, 2020

Did you know I offer a free giftwrapping option when you buy a piece of jewellery from me?

I use recycled packaging wherever possible, sourcing illustrated wrapping paper from independent designers and ribbon made from recycled plastic bottles. I re-use postal bags and boxes which might mean the parcel looks a little scruffy on the outside but reveals a beautifully wrapped box within.

The Secret Garden collection 2020

Katherine Bree August 7, 2020

When I was a child, I remember reading "the Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It captured my imagination and entered my dreams.

The magic of finding an overgrown secret garden behind a hidden doorway became reality when I was taken to the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall…

aBOUT ME

Hello and welcome to my website. I am an established and self taught jewellery designer. Originally I trained in textile design and worked as a knitwear designer for several years. I enjoy experimenting with colour and sourcing unusual semi-precious stones for my designs.

Ah, haughty hills, sardonic solitudes,
What wizard touch hath, crowning you with gold,
Cast Tyrian purple o'er broad-shouldered woods,
And to your pride anointed empire sold
For wan traditioned death, whose misty moods
Shake each huge throne of quarr
Ah, haughty hills, sardonic solitudes, What wizard touch hath, crowning you with gold, Cast Tyrian purple o'er broad-shouldered woods, And to your pride anointed empire sold For wan traditioned death, whose misty moods Shake each huge throne of quarried shadows cold? Now where the agate-foliaged forests sleep, Bleak briars are ruby-berried, and the brush Flames - when the winds armsful of motion heap In wincing gusts upon it - amber blush; The beech an inner beryle breaks from deep Encrusting topaz of a sullen flush.
